In the modern manufacturing world, you will not find too many products that have not been made without at least a small contribution of CNC machining. From toys and household appliances, through to cars, and medical devices, CNC machining services are one of the most versatile manufacturing processes available. Here at PT Engineers, we are proud to be a leading independent precision CNC machining facility committed to offering our services to a wide range of national and international services and industries.
What Is CNC Machining?
CNC machining is a manufacturing process which uses pre-programmed computer software to control the movement of complex tools and machinery. From grinders and mills, through to lathes and routers, CNC machining can control many different types of tools to cut and fabricate parts and components for a wide range of industries and applications. The use of the computer software as opposed to manually controlling the tools means that we can achieve high levels of accuracy in a fast and efficient manner. Furthermore, with all major production processes being automated, we can achieve the highest levels of quality and consistency for both small and large batches of components.
How Does CNC Machining Work?
CNC machining uses advanced PC controlling systems and software which allow numerical control – this is essentially a program that is customised for a component. The tools move and operate through numerical control and the machine itself is programmed with “G-code” – the CNC machining language. This language dictates the entire feed rate, coordination, location, and speed of the tools throughout the entire CNC machining process. Additionally, the computers also control the positioning and velocity of the operating tools, allowing for the highest degrees of precision.
To begin with, CAD software (either 2D or 3D) will create a drawing of the desired component, before creating a code that the computerised technology will be able to interpret into actions for the tools. After plenty of thorough trialling and testing, the CNC machining with its unique coded instructions can take place.
The Benefits Of CNC Machining
CNC machining services are popular and often favoured over manual machining due to the fact that they create a streamlined manufacturing process with consistently precise results.
Some key advantages include:
- The ability to repeat the same process again and again (allowing for uniformed batches of products)
- Each component is almost guaranteed to match the exact prototype specifications
- Greater accuracy
- Faster production rates
- CNC is very accurate, meaning it can produce complex shapes which wouldn’t be possible to create using manual machinery
- Less staff are required – therefore a more cost-effective manufacturing process
